Born Karl Anderson Jr in 1959, to a former model and her student husband, Michael Kors was surrounded by fashion from an early age.
While studying fashion design at one of the most notable fashion colleges in the world - the Fashion Institute of Technology - Kors had already started to create his own fashion label, and all at the tender age of 19. Launched in 1981, his womenswear line was an immediate hit, featuring in some of New York's most notable fashion stores including Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman.
In 1997 Kors started working as creative director and women's ready-to-wear designer at famous French fashion house Celine. His creative and fashion-forward designs have often been credited with turning the fashion house around and his ability to do this has brought him much acclaim within the fashion industry.
In 2002, Kors developed his independent line further to include a menswear range. The year after, Kors left Celine to focus solely on his independent Michael Kors brand. This year saw the beginning of the biggest expansion phase that the brand would see. Kors expanded the brand to include jeans, women's handbags and footwear. He also introduced his popular accessories ranges which included his infamous watch and sunglasses range.
Kors is well-known for his strong philosophy of designing clothes that people want to wear, mainly focussing on basic designs and neutral colours. The popularity of the Michael Kors brand has been evident among Hollywood Celebrities. International stars such as Michelle Obama, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Rachel McAdams are all fans of the Michael Kors brand. While working as creative director at Celine, Kors was also responsible for providing wardrobe additions for many famous films including Possession, Bandits and The Thomas Crown Affair.
The reality television show Project Runway was to become Michael Kors next venture in 2009. In the show aspiring fashion designers are given the chance to win USD$100,000 to start their own fashion label. Kors was part of the judging panel that would each week assess each candidates designs and decide if they would be continuing on their dream to become a fashion designer.
